Toward building a modern Hanoi studies discipline

thuongIn order to express profound gratitude to a talented Hanoi studies scholar, Professor Tran Quoc Vuong, with the desire to move toward building a modern Hanoi studies discipline. On 24/12, the Institute of Hanoi Studies – Hanoi Metropolitan University organized the seminar: “Tran Quoc Vuong, the Professor Who Pioneered Modern Hanoi Studies.”

The workshop attracted the participation of a large number of leading experts, scientists, and researchers on the history and geography of Vietnam.

Tribute to a Great Scholar of Hanoi Studies 

thuongAfter completing the project on fostering knowledge of Hanoi Studies for 6,600 managers, teachers of general education schools, and students, and building a Hanoi Studies space based on the model taught by Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong, the Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Training, Hanoi Metropolitan University, decided to organize the scientific conference “Tran Quoc Vuong – The Professor Who Pioneered Modern Hanoi Studies,” commemorating the 20th anniversary of Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong’s passing (2005–2025) on the morning of December 24.

 thuongThe conference attracted 33 papers by 39 authors addressing all fields of Hanoi Studies that Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong painstakingly researched and helped to establish. “I am someone with long ‘seniority’ as a student of the teacher and considered myself familiar with assessments of him, yet now, reading this manuscript collection, I have learned many new things and gained a more complete, profound, essential, and fresher understanding of the Teacher’s contributions—a great master of modern Hanoi Studies,” shared Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Ngoc, NGND, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Historical Science Association and Member of the Council of Hanoi Metropolitan University.

 thuongMr. Pham Quang Nghi, former Politburo member and former Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, shared that he was a student of Tran Quoc Vuong. This conference, first and foremost, carries profound humanistic significance, helping many of the teacher’s students commemorate Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong and also serving as a tribute to the professor’s great contributions across many dimensions, from scholarship to practice. Dr. Pham Quang Nghi emphasized that Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong was always someone who liked to stand among people—or more precisely, someone who was always surrounded by people.

Prof. Dr. Do Hong Cuong, Rector of Hanoi Metropolitan University, stated that the university identifies research, training, and capacity building in Hanoi Studies not merely as a professional direction, but as a mission to preserve, disseminate, and enrich the cultural identity of the Capital in the era of integration. This is also a practical contribution by the university to implementing Program No. 06-CTr/TU of the Hanoi Party Committee on “Cultural development; improving the quality of human resources; building elegant and civilized Hanoians for the period 2021–2025.”

thuongAccording to incomplete statistics, from 1959 to 2005, Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong produced 71 major and minor works on Hanoi, including 28 important works that left a distinctive mark on the historical–cultural space of Co Loa – Van Xuan – Dai La – Thang Long – Hanoi.

Step-by-step digitization of the discipline of Hanoi Studies

thuongMs. Le Thi Thu Huong, Director of the Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Training at Hanoi Capital University, said that Hanoi Studies has become an official subject and a hallmark of the university, with more than 2,000 students studying the subject each year.

thuongNot only developing within the university, the Institute has completed the appraisal of local subject materials to train Hanoi general education teachers in Hanoi Studies in accordance with the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program.

thuongHanoi Capital University has developed 10 textbooks/reference books serving the teaching of Hanoi Studies; digitized more than 300 documents on Ha Noi from the Thang Long – Ha Noi book collection. The Institute of Ha Noi Studies has built the hanoihoc website, connecting with Ha Noi Publishing House to upload digital learning materials to the website. Through digital technology, materials have been reconstructed to help teachers and students conveniently explore knowledge in many cultural and historical fields of the Capital.

thuongNotably, the Institute of Hanoi Studies has completed the construction of a meaningful Hanoi Studies space in Thuong Tin, Campus 4 of Hanoi Capital University, allowing students who do not have the opportunity to travel across all regions to experience them within this space.

thuongIn the context of rapid digital transformation, modern, interdisciplinary Hanoi Studies needs to be concretized through new methods and approaches for both researchers and learners studying and exploring Hanoi.

thuongHanoi Capital University has built a Hanoi Studies space, gradually modeling and digitizing it so that learners can experience, feel, and live within the space of old and present-day Hanoi.

thuongIn the context of Hanoi moving toward a development model based on heritage resources and human creativity, the ideas of Professor Tran Quoc Vuong further demonstrate enduring vitality, predictive power, and strategic guiding value.

thuongFor Thang Long - Hanoi, Professor Tran Quoc Vuong was not only a researcher but also a pioneer who opened a new scientific paradigm, laying the foundation for the formation and development of modern Hanoi Studies with many new approaches to heritage conservation, urban development, and the construction of the Thang Long - Hanoi identity in the contemporary context./.
